The Baltic Way
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus 2012
A research expedition on bicycles.
The project took inspiration from the Baltic Chain in framing the direction of our journey, taking us from North to South along a route that connected 2,000,000 people across the Baltic States in 1989 in an act of united dedication towards their independence from Soviet control.
Over a two month period we followed this way from Tallinn to Riga on to Vilnius and then into Belarus, in a process of excavating stories from this time, as well as penetrating into the folkloric tradition that gives each of these regions a strong sense of self and otherness.
This expedition lead us into a spiral of story telling, wild camping and unexpected encounters and generosity.

On a road of fluid frames, We entered from somewhere.
Borders now perfumed a feeling of fresh ease, haste without goals.
We proceeded past straight lines of tired road-kill, a strange series of milestones.
Turning left, to as tired a tract of land,
Latvia was here.
And here, sleep was ready.
